All About Maria

Hello! My name is Maria Del Carmen Huerta and I was born in Long Beach, California on January 27, 1999.
p1030123.jpgThough I was born in Long Beach, I actually grew up in the High Desert of California, I lived in one of the towns on Route 66. Then I moved to the Bay Area towards the beginning of middle school. Apart from that I have fallen in love with the Bay Area, especially with all the wonderful offered for health and fitness. I like to run on my own time, I try to run everyday after school and in the mornings on weekends. I do this to have a healthy heart and running in general helps my stress. In addition to running, I enjoy my family. I love my home life, my culture, my family, and our food I think it's all great. Majority of my family speaks Spanish, I am second generation in this country. Originally, my family is from Mexico and Guatemala. We like to keep in touch with our culture and keep it alive as much as possible. The English is so so with most of the adults, but they do try. Not only do I love my family, but something else takes up a big part of my heart as well her name is Lilo.
IMG_20151002_172855.jpg    My guinea pig is named Lilo, she is the joy of my life and I refer to her as my child. I find her to be unique, because I  believe she thinks she is ten times bigger than she actually is. In general when I get home I am usually tired, stressed from all the work I did, and the work I have to do, but she helps relax me and keeps me serene. Though she entertains me a lot, on my free time I do also enjoy a little Netflix and chill. What I think is funny is that in order for me to feel productive at all I have to run at least once a day.
airline-clipart-airline-clipart-airplane-clipart.jpgApart from my life at home I also like to dream as well. It has always been a goal of mine to travel as much as possible. Especially to India. I have always wanted to go to India, I think the architecture, culture, and everything being colorful is beautiful. I haven’t been there because I know no one there, I’m broke, my family can’t afford it, and I’m still a minor so can’t go on my own. I do know that one day I will be able to travel as much as I want. I think it would be surprising to see a woman who was once a little girl doing silly things being able to accomplish that. Speaking of which I did many not so smart things when I was little. In particular with cherries.
When I was four I use to like sticking cherry pits up my nose and blow them out across the room. One day I couldn’t blow it out, I had a cherry pit stuck in my nose. I sat facing the couch my back facing everything, I was contemplating on my life and what I had just done. I was sitting for a good hour and a half, the fact that I was being quiet made my mother worry and check up on me. When she called my name and asked me what was wrong, I turned around then cried out “I have something in my nose!” My mother at the time was pretty young she had no idea what to do. So she called my grandmother and the rest of the mothers in the apartment to help out. They didn’t know what to do either, they made many suggestions. Many of the suggestions were strange and unreasonable. My mother wanted to take me to the hospital, but before deciding to go she called my aunt instead. My aunt told her to take the ends of her long hair, brush it under my nose to make me sneeze. Then I sneezed and the cherry pit came out. From that day on my relationship with cherries has changed and became more special. Of course after a while she did not let me eat cherries unsupervised in case I did it again.
Anyway, I feel that by having endurance, being strong, and feeling good about myself will make me healthy which will lead to happiness. This is exactly why I think exercise, fitness, and health is so important.  I am not exactly talking about having a thigh gap or six pack. I just want to feel good about myself and be able to do a few strenuous exercises. Also, if I learn how to be healthy now I feel that when I am on my own like in college I will be able to take care of myself. I hope to learn this in Wellness Warriors.
